HOUSE OF GLASS: SHATTERED

CHAPTER ONE

ELODIE GLASS

“Square your shoulders.”

“Like this?”

I adjust Aya’s body so that she’s perfectly perpendicular to the wooden dummy five meters in front of her.

“There. Now remember, he can move fast but you have to wait until he’s in range before you throw. Otherwise the axe won’t hit him with enough force to do any serious damage and you’re dead. Once you can see the whites of his eyes, you have to be ready. That’s your chance.”

Today we’re working on increasing Aya’s speed. She’s got good reflexes and she’s quick, but not inhumanly fast.

She braces her weapon with both hands, then draws her left back over her shoulder and makes her throw. She nails it; the head of the axe is buried directly in the dummy’s face.

“Good!” I’m genuinely impressed. “See what I mean about the wrist? You have to throw your whole upper body into the throw, propelled through your hips, but then the real edge, the speed, comes from that last little flick of the wrist.”

“Yeah, I get what you mean. It’s all in the technique. Can we try again?”

We’ve already been throwing the axe for nearly two hours but I don’t get tired and she’s so proud of herself that I won’t deny her. And she deserves to be proud. She’s a quick learner and she seems to have a natural talent for melee weapons. Her smile lights up her face and I don’t think I’ve ever seen her so happy.

But then again, I don’t think she’s ever had the chance to feel this way before.

I’ve known for years that Aya’s trauma turned her into a shell of the person she could have been, hiding alone in the safety of her little den, afraid to pursue any possible interests because she’s had to constantly look over her shoulder.

The more I get to know her, though, the more I can see that her deep insecurities were planted long before Olsen Leonard ravaged her life.

She barely ever talks about herself unless I ask her specific questions, but I’ve heard all about her perfect older sister. Nala was more talented, Nala was prettier, Nala was smarter, Nala was just superior in every possible way. And then Nala was martyred to save her ‘worthless’ little sister’s life.

That’s the way Aya sees things at least.

I never knew Nala. Maybe it’s all true, maybe Nala was a legendary beauty who was on the brink of giving Chopin a run for his money.

But there’s no way that she could have held a candle to the light of my Aya.

It’s simply not possible.

I just wish that I could make her see herself through my eyes. I wish that I could show her how magical she really is, but she’s not making it easy for me. Whenever I tell her how I feel about her she tends to react by disparaging herself and it breaks my frozen heart.
